虎门二桥又叫新虎门大桥，项目路线起于广州南沙，经广州市番禺区，穿越虎门港进入东莞市沙田镇，终点与广深沿江高速公路相接。大桥地处珠江黄埔大桥与虎门大桥之间，沿线跨越珠江大沙水道、海鸥岛、珠江泥洲水道，搭建起珠江东西两岸的过江大通道。
目前连接广州与东莞的虎门大桥，日通行量已达12万辆次，远超8万辆次设计标准。虎门二桥通车后，将有效疏解虎门大桥过江压力，缓解珠三角核心地区交通拥堵状况。今后从广州南沙到东莞虎门的车程，将从现在的1个多小时缩短至15分钟。
