该口岸未来投入使用后，将进一步推进粤港澳大湾区互联互通，助力粤港澳大湾区打造成国际一流湾区和城市群。
莲塘口岸是粤港合作重点项目之一，位于罗湖区莲塘街道西南角，北临罗沙路，南至深圳河，是深圳规划建设的第七座跨境陆路口岸，为货检和旅检综合性陆路口岸，承担香港与深圳东部、惠州以及粤东、赣南、闽南之间的跨界货运，并兼顾客运，是实现深港跨界交通“西进西出、东进东出”总体格局的东部重要口岸。
