莲塘口岸属于非港珠澳大桥口岸，在此就赘述港珠澳大桥口岸入出香港粤港车牌办理条件：在广东省登记的国有企业、collective enterprise、private enterprise，上一年度纳税数额达到人民币100万元以上，可以申办1个内地入出香港商务车指标（不予增办）。
莲塘口岸香港（粤Z）籍车辆经非港珠澳大桥口岸入出内地的粤港车牌办理条件：在广东省投资的国外和香港、澳门、台湾投资者，其上一年度在广东省纳税数额符合以下条件，可以申办香港入出内地商务车指标：上一年度纳税数额达到15万以上的，可申办第1个指标；上一年度的纳税数额达到50万以上的，可申办第2个指标；上一年度的纳税数额达到人民币100以上的，可以申办第3个指标；从申办第4个指标起，上一年度的纳税数额每增加100万即可增办1个指标，zui多不超过15个（包括该投资者已申办的所有指标）。
莲塘/香园围口岸是粤港合作重点项目，是完善深港口岸布局，实施深港跨境交通“东进东出、西进西出”战略调整的重要一环。目前莲塘口岸只设有2条小汽车出入境查验通道，通行能力为每日2000架次。受到口岸建设规划的限制，莲塘口岸开放初期只会发放2000个香港车来往内地的私家车两地牌指标。
